Fan Fiction Contest Results

The Friends of the Milton Free Public Library (MFPL) announced the winners of the library's  Fun Fan Fiction Contest at the 2008 Milton Winter Carnival. There are two winners; one from Nute Middle School and one from Nute High School . The winners were chosen by the Friends of MFPL in a "blind" reading of all the entries. (The Friends did not know the author's name or grade, only that they were either a middle school or high school student.)  Each winner received a prize of $125.00.

The middle school winner is Emma Baker (below left), an 8th grade student at Nute. Emma wrote an extra paragraph to her favorite book, Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer. Ms. Baker imagined how the "klutzy" main character, Bella, would react if she was to go on a yacht trip with her boyfriend and his family.

The High School winner is a Nute Junior, Matt Grenney (above right.) Matt wrote an alternate ending to John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men in which no one dies and George and Lenny's dreams come true. Matt also placed third in this year's VFW "Voice of Democracy" contest.

Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to all our entrants for making it a tough decision!

Library Maple Tree Project Moves One Step Ahead

Friends of the Milton Free Public Library began work in 2007 to help preserve the old Maple trees at the Library by getting dead limbs pruned and weak limbs cabled by Royle Tree Service.  Susann Brown, President of Friends, arranged to have a load of organic compost delivered to fertilize the trees.

We were fortunate to locate Earthtenders in Farmington, a small business run by Eva Christensen, who makes and sells organic compost.  We are very grateful for the discount she gave our non-profit project.

Larry and Susann Brown spread the compost under the trees, and we will all wait to see the gradual improvement in the health of the trees as the seasons change.  Mulching will be the next step, and perhaps a planter of shade loving perennials will complete the project.
