Patron Rights

Patrons of the Milton Free Public Library have the right to:

High-quality service. The library will provide appropriate and well-organized resources. Patrons can expect fair policies and equal access. The responses to all requests will be accurate, unbiased and courteous.
Intellectual freedom. No resources will be censored. However, the library will use discretion when displaying morbid, sexually explicit or controversial material, especially where children have easy access.
Privacy and confidentiality. The library will not tell other people about any information that a patron has asked for or received. It will not tell others of any resources that a patron has consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.
A fair library environment that treats people with respect, fairness and good faith.
An open library environment that does not advance private interests at the expense of patrons, colleagues, or the Town of Milton
Respect for ones personal beliefs. The beliefs of others will not interfere with the purpose of this library or keep it from providing access to informational resources.
A balance between the interests of information users and the intellectual property rights holders. The library will not knowingly allow copyright infringements to occur using library materials or services.

Patron responsibilities

All patrons of the Milton Free Public Library are responsible for:

Proper checkout and timely return of borrowed materials, per the return policy. A patron is responsible for any and all materials taken out on his/her library card.
Care in the use of library materials, equipment and furnishings.
Maintaining a clean, safe, and reasonably quiet facility.
Compliance with library policies and guidelines.
Courtesy and polite behavior in all circumstances and at all times.

Young Patrons (under 18)

We encourage families to visit the library and pick out materials together. While our staff is happy to help, we feel that parents are the best judges of what materials are appropriate for their family. Therefore, our staff will leave these decisions to you, and will check out any materials a child brings to the desk.

We encourage everyone to use the library to explore, have fun, and learn. Please respect the other patrons. When in doubt, “inside voices” are a great “fall-back position”. Parents are expected to supervise their children, and maintain their good behavior.

We are happy to have well-behaved children visit the library without an adult chaperone. However, if a child misbehaves and continues after being warned by a staff member, s/he will be asked to leave.

Parents, if your child is dropped off at the library, please make sure to pick him or her up before closing time. We do not feel it is safe to leave any child alone outside after closing, and we cannot keep the library open while a child waits for an overdue ride.

The library has many games and activities for children. While we love to see them used, we do NOT love putting them away afterwards! We expect our young patrons to put away any books and materials before leaving the library. We also expect their parents to remind and motivate them to do this.
