We're excited to announce our first Star Students of the New Year !!Milton Elementary School has many outstanding students. The 5th
grade class has two students that exemplify the qualities of a star
student....
Abigail Douglas "is interested in all aspects of
learning. She is like a sponge and is a pleasure to have in
class."according to 5th grade teacher Linda Bates. Abigail especially
likes math , but excels in all classes. Although she does well is
school, she also finds plenty of time for sports. In winter, Abigail
plays basketball for the Milton Recreation Department. Her favored
position is "guard". She also plays volleyball and softball and
practices her skill of riding the unicycle. Abigail is a
great friend. Her 4 older sisters have helped model the importance of
friendship. Abigail has three best friends: Emilee, Emily and Katanna.
Abigail also has one younger sister and a cat , she values
responsibility and caring as well as friendship. This chocoholic loves to read. Her current favorite is "Rules" by Cynthia Lord.
This second student may seem familiar. Caleb Goff was featured last year as a
Fourth grade star student! Caleb shines even brighter this year by
turning his attention to social issues, most recently by collecting food
for the Milton Food Pantry (located in Milton Industrial Park). After
the earthquake in Japan, Caleb created a program where Milton
Elementary School students could wear hats (usually a dress code no-no
at M.E.S.) by donating 50 cents . This program raised $355 that was sent
to Japanese earthquake survivors. Caleb has been thinking
about how best to combat bullying. "Our country is about freedom. When
someone is being bullied, their rights are taken away and none of us are
free and it is not fair." Goff notes. He was especially upset to learn
that kids are committing suicide because they are victims of bullying.
To combat bullying, Caleb has formed an anti-bullying club and plans on
holding a poster contest, the best of which will be displayed throughout
M.E.S. He considers himself brave and "wants to stand up for what is
right".
Caleb has already given some consideration to
running for office one day and thinks he may want to be president of the
United States. His parents let him stay up late the night of the New
Hampshire Primaries and has had conversations with his family about this
year's political contests and what a person must be willing to do to
become president. To celebrate primary day, Caleb wore a full suit to
school. This is the second suit he owns and one of his suits and one of
his three ties on Tuesdays and Thursdays to show his seriousness.
In spite of his serious attire, Caleb is always smiling noting that he doesn't want to see sad faces and wants everyone happy.
His
teacher, Mrs. Trafton, notes" Caleb is the kind kid I would like to
have a class of. If that were the case, the class could really take off
and go ."
ABOUT STAR STUDENTS
Respect
Responsibility
Caring
Safety
Not only can a student be given a star card in the classroom, but also in the halls, playgrounds, school library, on a school bus, cafeteria, offices –anywhere on school grounds. The student can redeem star cards for special drawings in their classes or school-wide. Some of the prizes in the classroom would be a “homework pass” (Excused from one homework assignment), extra computer time, lunch time with the teacher, or a material gift: like a special pencil or pen. A school-wide prize might be lunch with the principal, “principal for a day” job, lunch at the “Star Table” (a special honored space in the cafeteria, the ability to “cut” to the front of the lunch-line, and a yummy star cookie). Star card winners are also acknowledged daily during morning announcements. If a student collects 100 star cards during the course of the school year, their name is painted on the “Galaxy of Stars” in the front hallway of the school. The Milton Free Public Library will have one star card student highlighted each month. This student will offer a theme for the library’s entryway display and let the community know a little about themselves so that the community can learn a little more about the great kids at Milton Elementary.
